The call that came from someone who wasn’t even there

Beacon & Burgundy Travel

A group of 24 was in Punta Cana together this spring. Different flights, different airlines, same trip. When the weather rolled in and started canceling flights out of the airport, one couple in the group got caught in it.

I didn’t book their flights. That’s the part people don’t expect.

I found out because someone else in the group, already home, already unpacked, called me. Not the couple. A friend of theirs who knew who to call when something went wrong.

I called the couple immediately.

They were stuck. Their flight home was cancelled, the resort they’d been staying at was booked solid for the extra night, and it was late enough that most people would’ve just started scrolling hotel apps and hoping for the best.

I got on my laptop and started searching. Not just “what’s available,” but what’s actually a good call here. I was weighing three things at once: was the hotel safe, was it reputable, and how close was it to the airport so they weren’t fighting traffic on top of everything else the next morning.

Found them a place. Got them settled. Checked back in to make sure they had what they needed for the night.

Here’s the review they left after:

“Allie was wonderful to work with. Extremely responsive, thorough, thoughtful and knowledgeable! To top it off she made herself available to us from Punta Cana to help find us a place when we were stranded due to flight cancellation! Knowing we have someone to count on in a time like that is above and beyond!”

I think about that phrase a lot. Someone to count on.

Why this matters more than people think

Most people assume a travel advisor’s job ends once the itinerary is booked. Flights confirmed, hotel confirmed, done, see you when you get back.

That’s not how it actually works. Not for me, anyway.

Things happen on trips. Weather delays flights. Airlines cancel routes with almost no notice. A connection gets missed and suddenly you’re stuck somewhere you didn’t plan to be, at an hour when nobody wants to be making hard decisions alone.

You can be the most organized traveler in the world and none of that will matter, because none of it is in your control.

What is in your control is who you have to call when it happens.

An OTA doesn’t pick up the phone at 9pm. A booking engine can’t weigh “is this hotel safe” against “is it close to the airport” for you in real time. It can show you five options sorted by price. It can’t tell you which one is actually the right call for two exhausted people who just want the night to be over.

That’s the difference. Not the booking itself. What happens after, when something goes sideways.

What I actually do in that moment

I’m not saying this to make it sound dramatic. Most of the time, planning a trip is genuinely fun, the excited back-and-forth, picking excursions, getting someone hyped for a destination they’ve never been to.

But the reason clients keep coming back, and the reason people they’ve never met end up calling me on their behalf, is what happens in the moments that aren’t fun. The cancellations. The delays. The “we don’t know what to do right now” calls.

In this case, that meant getting on the phone fast, searching availability myself, and making a judgment call under pressure instead of leaving two stressed-out people to sort it out alone at midnight in an airport lounge.

It’s a small thing on paper. It didn’t feel small to them.

If you’re deciding whether an advisor is worth it

I get it. You can book a flight and a hotel yourself. Most people can, most of the time.

But most of the time isn’t the point. The point is the one time it isn’t most of the time, when a flight gets cancelled, or a storm rolls in, or a connection gets missed, and you need someone who already knows the destination, already has your details, and already knows how to move fast.

That’s what I mean when I say vacations should fill your cup up. It’s hard to relax on a trip if part of you is bracing for what happens when something goes wrong. Having someone in your corner takes that weight off, before the trip and during it.

If you’ve got a trip coming up and want someone who’ll actually answer when it matters, reach out.

May adventure follow you wherever you may go.

She wanted one thing. We built a trip around it.

“I want to swim with sea turtles. How can we make that happen?”

That’s the entire ask a client brought me a few months back. No resort in mind, no region picked out, no dates locked. Just one very specific bucket list item and a question about whether it was actually possible.

It is. But not everywhere, and not by accident.

I started researching areas known for sea turtles around her travel dates, and that’s how we landed on Akumal, Mexico. Akumal means “place of the turtles” in Yucatec Maya, and it earns the name. The bay has been a protected sea turtle habitat for decades, and green sea turtles feed on the seagrass right offshore, close enough that you don’t need a boat excursion or a lucky day. You need the right stretch of water and someone who knows it.

That’s the part clients don’t see when they’re comparing resorts online. Picking Akumal wasn’t about finding a pretty beach. It was about matching her one request to the one place that could actually deliver it, consistently, on the dates she was traveling.

What she found in the water

She didn’t just see one turtle. She swam with them multiple times, and one of them was, in her words, the biggest one she saw all trip. Turtles weren’t the only thing down there either. Squid, octopus, a stingray gliding along the bottom. Akumal Bay does that. It’s not a one-species show.

I also connected her with a local guide, someone who knows the bay, knows where the turtles are actually feeding that day, and who brought a camera into the water with her. He shot photos and video the whole time so she didn’t have to choose between experiencing the moment and capturing it.

That’s a small detail. It matters anyway. A lot of people miss the best part of a trip because they’re too busy trying to film it themselves.

The hatch on the beach

Her resort sat close enough to the turtle nesting sites that she got to watch a hatch happen right there on the sand. Dozens of hatchlings making their way to the water while she stood and watched.

She went to Akumal to swim with adult turtles. She left having also watched the next generation head out to sea for the first time.

The text I got mid-trip

She texted me while she was still there, right after coming out of the water:

“I met an amazing local tour guide who took pictures and videos so I could enjoy the experience. I was literally crying in my goggles from joy.”

I’ve been doing this since August 2022, and that’s the text I hope for every time. Not a five-star review three weeks later. A real-time, still-dripping-wet message because something actually landed the way she hoped it would.

What came after

She did leave that review, too. Her words: 10 stars, not 5. She talked about how many bucket list items she checked off, how available I was from the moment she booked until after she got home, how fast I answered questions along the way.

And she booked her next trip with me. A 40-day trip in 2027.

That’s the part I want other clients to hear. This wasn’t a one-off lucky vacation. It was a client trusting me with one specific request, getting exactly what she asked for, and coming back to hand me something a lot bigger.

If you’ve got a version of “sea turtles”

Maybe it’s not turtles for you. Maybe it’s swimming with whale sharks, or seeing the northern lights from the water, or one specific excursion you saw on someone else’s Instagram years ago and never forgot.

Tell me what it is. That’s genuinely how this starts, every time. I’ll do the research on where and when it’s actually possible, not just where it sounds nice, and we’ll build the rest of the trip around getting you there.

May adventure follow you wherever you may go.
